Full Stop (2019) — for processed Violin, Viola, and Baritone Horn
premiered online (pandemic-era)
notes:
“Full Stop” explores the possibilities of performance combined with granular synthesis techniques. The violin, viola, and euphonium are traditionally melodic instruments. However, through granular synthesis, they are able to produce sounds that defy a melodic function. They can create textures, sound effects, and unusual “shadow” sounds that appear in tandem with their instrument’s natural sound.
In “Full Stop”, the score functions more as a suggestion than a mandate. It represents one of an infinite number of possible manifestations of “Full Stop.” The players are encouraged to approach it as a depiction of a singular possibility, and from that point, use their own sensibilities in: a) what they play on their instrument, and b) how they process it using the granular Pure Data patch.
